Right!! For my first ever blog post I am choosing the massive topic of launching new products and services BUT I am just going to list a few simple points that helped us at Nido. I am going to make this a series so each post is kept short – and you have to come back for more!! I would be really interested in your own experiences so please do add to this. Although we are pretty happy at Nido with how our new services are going it seemed to take longer than we initially thought – as with a lot of things I suppose – so your own tips are greatly appreciated and I am sure will help other people too – thank you.

1 Stick with what you know – make sure any new product is closely linked to your core offering and supports what you do already. Ideally you should be giving added value to your existing clients or being able to go to a new market with a slightly tweaked product.

2 Research, research, research!! Ask your best and most valued clients what they think of your new offering. Would they buy it? Will it help you attract more of these type of client? Do they know anyone who could be interested…

3 Try it out and make changes as you go – we did 5 ‘practice’ sales and marketing audits before we charged anyone full price and the changes we made were invaluable. Our ‘guinea pigs’ were extremely happy as they got something they valued for free and we got some great testimonials.

4 Make sure it will actually make your company money!! You may think this is obvious now but don’t get carried away (I say this from experience!!)

Well – I told you it would be short!! Please do add to this as developing new products and services is something that seems to get done with varying success and I believe being able to do this well really helps companies survive and thrive. Thank you.

Talk Title and Synopsis: The 4 cornerstones of good business development

Working with the wrong customers can be a drain on your time, resources and profitability. Conversely working with the right customers can be a pleasure and one which takes your business to the next level.

However, in order to find the right customers, you have to actively go out and get them.

For lots of companies, especially those formed from very technical or creative backgrounds, or working in highly competitive markets, sales and marketing is one of the hardest things to get right. And often the most difficult part is knowing where to start.

For any proactive business development to be successful you need to start at the beginning. This means good planning across 4 key areas of sales and marketing.

Tim will talk you through these 4 areas, giving you some useful and practical examples based on his own experiences.

A qualified strategic Chartered Marketer and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, Liz’s expertise comes from both private and public sector organisations where she has specialised in marketing communications, advertising, research, marketing planning, evaluation and business strategy.

As a trainer and management consultant for 15 years, Liz has complemented this with lecturing at all levels of the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) qualifications plus lecturing at university. The first part of her career was spent in FMCG including roles such as Marketing Manager for Kleenex® tissues, Senior Brand Manager Trebor Softmints, Brand Manager EdenVale. After a Market Research manager position at Kimberley Clark, Liz moved to Eurotunnel and then began a new phase of her career in marketing consultancy and training. She is now pioneering new work in Social and Education Marketing, enjoying the challenge of less mature markets.

Liz’s key marketing and training expertise is in the following areas:

Analysing and diagnosing strategic marketing issues.

Customer insight and market research to inform strategic direction

Establishing competitive positioning and market proposition.

Translating client needs into creative, brand and advertising strategies.

Identifying and understanding client behaviours.

Social marketing

Education marketing

Marketing planning and budgeting.

Determining and translating critical success factors into key performance indicators.

Liz always demonstrates a professional approach, no more so than in her role as Chair of CIM Sussex. Her passion for the job in hand never fails to motivate and inspire the delegates, managers, directors, professionals, and students with whom she works. As a workshop facilitator, Liz has a warm, encouraging style, which draws on her love and enjoyment of singing and acting as a pastime.

Talk Title and Synopsis: Don’t just talk – Listen!

When the words “Market Research” are mentioned, you may well envision huge amounts of time, data and money and feel that you ‘just can’t go there’!

But the good news is that it doesn’t have to be expensive and the cost of getting it wrong can be SO much worse. LISTEN to your customers, they will tell you what you need to know (even if it isn’t what you want to hear)!

Ultimately, you want the RIGHT customers, who are easy to find, communicate with and will recommend you. Market research and customer insight can help you find those customers and secure them, but you must listen to what they want.

…And there’s a dirty secret – you KNOW you should have the answers to important questions, but you haven’t quite dared to ask them yet – this talk will show you how listening to your customers pays dividends.

How the clients we win today shape our businesses tomorrow. Why getting out of bed is so much easier when you work with dolphins not sharks. How to minimise the competition by getting your positioning right. How getting the vision and business model right led iCrossing to growth.

About Arjo

Arjo Ghosh is chairman, iCrossing U.K. Ghosh founded search marketing agency pioneers, Spannerworks, in 1997, which was acquired by iCrossing in 2007. Ghosh led this integration and used his company’s technical strength to develop search marketing strategies for major brands including GSK, HBOS, Virgin, Woolworths and Standard Life. Driven by the evolution of search and social platforms he sees a media revolution in full swing, with devastating implications for those organisations who fail to engage with today’s savvy, connected and engaged population. This is why iCrossing has pioneered the integration of social media tools into its search and wider digital marketing strategies. As chairman, Ghosh is focused on overall company strategy and driving new opportunities in Europe. Ghosh is a founder member of WiredSussex, is an Independent Member of Council at the University of Sussex, and lives with his wife and family in Brighton.

“I have been deeply involved in the revolution in media since 1992 when I helped establish the U.K.’s first walk-in Apple Mac design studio in London. I saw that the phenomenal growth of the Internet would lead to search becoming the natural gateway for consumers and set about finding a group of passionate marketers and techies who shared the same view.”
